ABOUT US
Matt
I am a registered Mental Health Nurse and Mantra therapist. I have been working in eating disorders for the last 5 years and helping people find hope is one of the most important aspects of my work. I began my career working in a private inpatient eating disorder hospital treating people aged 8-18. I have spent the last three years working in the NHS as part of the community mental health team, treating people aged 0-25 suffering with eating disorders alongside other mental illnesses and neurodevelopmental difficulties.
My passion is early intervention and education, and I have been working at Elmhurst Ballet School providing them with training on eating disorders and doing 1-1 mental health counselling with students. I have also delivered training to hospitals across Birmingham to help spread awareness of the MEED guidance, to ensure that people with eating disorders on medical wards receive the treatment they need. Since COVID, young people in the UK are struggling at rates that have never been seen before. This isnโt just eating disorders, and cases of depression, anxiety, OCD and emotional dysregulation are climbing. When we take into consideration the prevalence of social media usage and the impact this has had on mental health, this trend is likely going to continue.
NHS services are trying extremely hard to firefight, but demand on services and funding are unfortunately creating delays in care across the country. I love the NHS and will continue to work for them for as long as possible. But I also wanted to do more to help people before they need such intensive input. This is why Reclaiming Wellbeing was started, and we will endeavour to support young people and adults to gain the coping skills and resilience they need to manage and take responsibility for their mental wellbeing.
ABOUT US
Abigail
I qualified as a mental health nurse in 2018 and have been working specifically in CAMHS eating disorders inpatient services for the past five years. I have worked with young people and families throughout this time, navigating through treatment of a range of conditions to support people into recovery. Recovery will look different for each individual, and I pride myself in my person-centred approach to care. I am a firm believer in empowering individuals to gain knowledge and understanding in order to support them to overcome these difficulties as each person is an expert in their own life.
Early intervention, education and support is key in helping people to manage and overcome mental health difficulties and allows individuals to live a life in which they are able to achieve and strive. 1 in 6 young people will experience a mental health condition and 50% of adult mental health illnesses start in childhood. Therefore, it clearly makes sense that by enabling young people to be more empowered in their coping skills, knowledge and understanding it will allow them to build resilience around these issues and in turn should help to relieve some of these potential long-term illnesses.
I see it as a natural progression to work in education and further supporting young people and those who work with them in mental health wellbeing and understanding. By doing this it helps to reduce the stigma and allows freedom of conversation around these topics, which as we know with developments in technology and use of social media that access to unhelpful or misleading information is unregulated and unprecedented. This leads to misunderstandings and in turn can make young people feel more isolated and alone. Therefore, by empowering people to understand about mental health and how important it is that we care and look after this as much as our physical health. It opens up avenues and reminders that there is hope and help out there which we want young people to access to support them to have the best opportunities in life.
What Our Clients Say
I am delighted to share my heartfelt testimonial for Mathew for his outstanding work at Elmhurst Ballet School. Matthew's dedication and expertise in fostering positive mental health have left an indelible mark on the students.
Judith – Elmhurst Ballet School
Have seen an immediate impact of the workshops with one young person coming to seek support, but they didn't feel confident enough to do this beforehand. They felt that they were more self-confident and understood the importance of asking for help.
Samantha – Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls
This workshop was really good, as it really made me think about different situations and how I would deal with them. I would definitely recommend them to a friend. Thank you Matt and Abigail for all your help and support.
